If you only read the headlines, the Malaysian graduate job market looks healthy. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), the graduate unemployment rate fell to 3.2% in 2024, down from 3.4% the year before. The national unemployment rate hit a decade low of 3.0% in 2025. Malaysia now has nearly six million graduates — 22.3% of the working-age population — and the vast majority of them are employed.

如果只看新闻标题,马来西亚的毕业生就业市场似乎一片大好。根据马来西亚统计局（DOSM）的数据,毕业生失业率在 2024 年降至 3.2%,低于前一年的 3.4%；2025 年全国失业率更是降至 3.0%,创十年新低。马来西亚如今拥有近 600 万名毕业生——占劳动年龄人口的 22.3%——其中绝大多数都有工作。

So why do so many fresh graduates tell a completely different story — months of applications with no replies, offers far below expectations, degrees that feel like they don't count?

"Employed" is not the same as "employed well""有工作"不等于"有好工作"

The answer sits one layer below the headline rate, in a statistic that gets far less attention: skill-related underemployment — graduates and diploma holders working in jobs that don't require their qualifications.

答案藏在头条数字的下一层,在一个远没那么受关注的统计指标里：技能性低度就业（skill-related underemployment）——即毕业生和文凭持有者从事着并不需要其学历的工作。

Read those numbers together and the picture changes completely. Malaysia doesn't have a graduate unemployment problem — it has a graduate underemployment problem. Roughly one in three graduates with a job is in a role that doesn't use what they studied. They're driving e-hailing, working retail counters, doing admin work — counted as "employed" in every official statistic, while their degree quietly depreciates.

把这些数字放在一起看,整个图景就完全不同了。马来西亚的问题不是毕业生失业,而是毕业生低就。大约每三位有工作的毕业生中,就有一位所做的工作与所学无关。他们在跑电召车、站零售柜台、做行政杂务——在所有官方统计中都被算作"已就业",而他们的文凭正在悄悄贬值。

National statistics are essential, but they're built to describe the labour market, not the job seeker. They can't tell us how many applications the average fresh graduate sends before the first interview. How long the search really takes for a psychology major versus a software engineering major. Whether the barrier was a missing skill, a missing connection, or simply a CV that never made it past the filter. What salary graduates expected — and what they actually accepted.

全国性统计固然重要,但它的设计初衷是描述劳动力市场,而不是描述求职者本身。它无法告诉我们：一位应届毕业生平均要投出多少份简历才能换来第一场面试；心理学专业和软件工程专业的求职周期到底差多少；卡住他们的究竟是缺一项技能、缺一个人脉,还是简历根本没通过筛选系统；毕业生期望的薪水是多少——而最终接受的又是多少。

These are the questions that decide whether a graduate's first year after university builds momentum or burns confidence. And right now, nobody in Malaysia is answering them systematically from the graduate's side of the table.
