The most open door in the job market is the one most graduates never knock on.

Ask a hall of fresh graduates where they're applying, and you'll hear the same names: banks, telcos, the Big Four, government-linked companies, multinationals with famous logos. These are fine employers — and their graduate programmes receive thousands of applications for a handful of seats.

Meanwhile, a different kind of employer is hiring with far less fanfare: AI startups, Web3 companies, crypto and fintech builders, and the broader wave of emerging tech firms setting up across the region. They rarely appear at campus career fairs. Most graduates never consider them. And that is precisely why they represent one of the least crowded paths into a real career.

Why emerging tech hires differently

Traditional graduate hiring is built around filters: university ranking, CGPA cutoffs, structured assessment centres. Young technology companies simply can't hire that way — they're small, they move fast, and every hire has to contribute within weeks. So they optimise for different signals:

For international students, this matters twice over. Smaller emerging-tech companies are often more flexible about nationality and more open to sponsoring work passes for talent they genuinely want — especially when the role involves cross-border markets, languages, or communities that international graduates naturally understand.

The trade-offs, honestly

This path isn't for everyone, and pretending otherwise would be bad consulting. Startups can fail; Web3 and crypto go through brutal market cycles; job scopes are fuzzy; training is "learn by doing" rather than a structured programme; and you must do your own due diligence on any company — especially in crypto, where legitimate builders and bad actors share the same industry. Part of Insightra's work is exactly this filtering: we connect students only with companies we've vetted through our sponsor network.

What we're researching next

Over the coming months, we're sitting down with founders and hiring managers at AI, Web3 and emerging tech companies across Malaysia and the region, asking the questions graduates most need answered: What roles are you actually hiring fresh graduates for? What makes a candidate with no experience hireable? What salary ranges are realistic? And for international graduates — what makes a work-pass sponsorship worth it to you?

The full interview series will be published here. If you run a company in this space and want to be part of it — or sponsor the students it serves — we'd love to talk.
